Well guys I have a opportunity to buy a real clean older truck. It is a 94, ext cab, long box, 4X4, 1 ton, DRW, 6.5 TD with a auto.
I know it isn't a power house but a clean old truck I like. All you see is new or newer trucks out there. This is a little different. (I know the 454 gasser has more HP and TQ)
She is super clean, no runt on the body (just normal surface runs on suspension), interior is super clean, NO mods at all ever done to it. The chassis has 220K, engine & tranny have aprox 40k. The tranny was rebuilt then the engine gave way 500 mile later due to broken crank/ failed harmonic balancer, common problem on the 6.5. The red paint is faded on the fiberglass "hips" of the DRW witch I can have repainted. Other wise perfect.
Maintenance has been kept up on since he has owned it. This is friend that has the truck, that he has finally decided to sell since he only uses it once or twice a year.
I know right away it will need the PMD relocated, 4" exhaust, and air filter to keep the reliability there.(common issues with 6.5 TD)
Anyways $4K and its mine. Not to often you see a old school work horse like this that is super clean and straight.

Those dashes are archaic, and the overall interior was better in the previous generation and the 1995+ trucks. That's a pretty good price, but they really were mediocre tow vehicles. I don't know the exact year they switched from mechanical to electronic injection, but from a friend who is a US Army mechanic, the mechanical trucks were easier and cheaper to work on.
Look here to compare other trucks around with similar power:

By my research 94 was the first year for the electronic injection. Ya I the dash/gauges suck, 1995 is when they changed.
O-Ya... Current tow vehicle is my 07 Escalade EXT....

$4k sounds good....around here anyway. Geez, 8-10k buys you a 2001+ rusted out hunk of crap that is close to needing to be junked.
I'd just make sure all else is okay, BJ's, steering, brakes, etc, etc, etc.

SB same her. Most trucks around here with some age is also rusted out, and they are asking a killing if it has a diesel.
Another option I have been looking at is a 3/4 burban. with gasser under the hood. But again hard to find without rust unless I want to travel 1000 miles.
However, Sydways would probably hang a guy high in a tree if it didn't have DRW wile pulling a boat

Looks Good! Check the front end for parts, They eat idler arms,, if its decent leave it. new ones end up the same way with in 20K miles. And if that one is a 2 piece drive shaft, check the hanger before you leave it on the ground. I know this from experience with those trucks. other than that they are a great slow truck that rarely make you walk

Truth be told, I now have a GM 2500HD (SRW, 2003 with 8.1L gasser & Allison) and I LOVE this truck. I tow all kind of stuff behind it; all the way up to 12,000+ lbs, and it tows almost as well as my PSD Ford F-350 Dually. Even though the gas mileage is horrendous, I pretty much use it as a DD and my tow-pig. The only time the Dually comes out is for long trips with the big boat; and car shows.
