My boat has run a best of 77.5 with 496HOs with stock 4 blade 28s. I consistently see 74-75-76 depending on load, but I almost always have full tanks and a lot gear, tools, stereo, etc. I have not done any dialing-in other than buying a set of 28s that were labbed for another boat. I will have them tweaked someday.
496HOs with a no-liner 37 will be an 80mph boat with labbed props and headers. Depending on options (weight) on the boat, it will vary a few +/-.

I’ve pretty much come to the same conclusion. I’m actually toying with the idea of building a 37 with HO’s, CMI headers, and XR’s. Obviously if I could afford to build a 525 boat I would. But the 496 boat will cost half the money to insure and I bet will be better on gas at cruise where we spend most of our time. Conditions around here are such that it is very seldom when you can really air the boat out SAFELY and comfortably so the extra mph at WOT is not important to me.
Of course the biggest question is resale down the road. Is this a big enough concern to not consider this motor package?

Another thing I was thinking about when I was making my decision was the cost of going to the CMI's and XR's... I believe the CMI are about $3800-$4500 per side depending on silent choice capability and the XR's were 2K per side over the X. So you are looking at about 12-13K more for the upgrades...That puts you now about 18K or so away from the 525EFI's. That made me think a lot more...Especially since I finance my toys, it was $134 dollars more a month for 525EFIs vs. 496HO CMI XR’s on a 20 year @ 6.5%. I hope this is helpfull...Either way you are going to get what you want and it is one hell of a boat...

It is great to hear all the input..I would love to move up this year, but one more season on the 28....what is the difference in the ride of 33' vs 37'? Say 2 footers(St.lawrence river or Lake Ontario), occasional cruiser wake and lots of ship traffic. I think the CMI's on 496HO is a great way to go...all things considered...purchase $$, insurance $$, fuel consumption, & warranty. I just thought it was blue motors or nothing...but I really have changed my opinion. Is the Poker Run that was cancelled in the same area as the James Jam? What's the deal?

Insurance is a big difference. Progressive will insure the 496 boat for around $2K with $1K deductible, no layup and no wind storm deductible. I have to go to one of the big boys for unsurance on the 525 boat at around $4K with minimum 2% deductible, Nov to Apr layup AND windstorm deductible.
Don't forget my $4K per year dry storage bill because my ocean front townhouse has no suitable parking.
Maybe I should take up golf!

im a fan of the 496. i have no and havent had a single problem with it. all i had to do was fix a leak in the heat exchanger. a 150 hrs of running and 200 bucks for a repair, ill take that on any boat. when i go for the 33 i think i will go for the 496s with the cmi package. i cant wait....

My boat 2002 boat had 496 ho's from the factory, Pat told me that the boat would run 78-80 mph. Would like to have seen what it would have done wuth the 1 inch spacer. Made my slip go from 23% down to 14%. Gave me about 2 mph.
