engine temp runs high
have a 38 Special with 2x 502's. One engine temp gets up close to 200F when I run the boat for 30 min with approx 3200RPM. Mechanic checked the impeller but is OK. It looks like engine doesn get enough water at higher RPM's.As soon as I throttle back temp goes back to 180F.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: engine temp runs high
Not sure how you check the pump without replacing the housing and impeller.
You have to take it off and disassemble it to check it. I rebuild mine at the beginning of every season. Good insurance.
May want to check the thermostat, I would definately rebuild the sea water pumps also. I saw on another thread where you had concerns about the water circulating pumps also.
Sounds like it is time for a little TLC.
Good Luck

Re: engine temp runs high
have seen in the past debris will get caught in oil cooler and will get a little warm. i would have your mechanic check in the cooler areas. it don't take alot to warm up 20 degrees

Re: engine temp runs high
I am running the same engines. I rebuild my pumps every year. cheap insurance. I have seen the impellers come apart and get washed up to the cooler. You might want to back flush the system just in case.
Just a thought.

I will change the impeller again just in case and replace both water pumps on the engines, they are rosty any way. Can you rebuilt them, my mechanic told be they have to be swapped with new ones, I think ~199$ each.
Thanks
Alfred

Re: engine temp runs high, problem solved
Impeller was OK, Pump was OK , I had a severe restriction in the waterflow in the Bravo transom assembly. There is a palstic piece connecting the bravo waterintake hose to the impeller housing .Normally you can put a finger through this piece in my case the opening was less then a pencil thick. The real problem is they had to take out the engine to get to this part. This should be a known problem occures after 4to 5 years , so watch out
