Low speed & Rpm's
I have a 1996 24' Baja Outlaw SST with the 454 Mag EFI/MP motor, and a 1.50 r Bravo 1 outdrive. The problem that I am having is it's NOT reaching the operating range 4600-5000 at wide open. And the gps is showing MAX 53 MPH. I can only get the boat to 4500 rpms, no matter how far that I trim it up. I played around with the tabs, and it only slows it down after 3 bars down from the top. The other thing that I have noticed is that the skeg is a little bent to the left. Could that slow me down about 10 MPH? I did the math and a 23p Mirage Plus prop on that boat should be around 62-64 MPH at 4900 rpms. I just had the prop re-done back to original and it didn't make any difference. Another thing is it is bouncing after about half throttle. The boat, motor, and outdrive all have around 327 hrs. on them. So I can't see too much of power loss. Have done a tune-up, cap, rotor, d.i. module, plugs, wires, cleaned flame arrestor, had to change IAC, and coolant temp sensor. I started having the problems after it ran into shallow water. And at the same time the IAC and running rich acted up. So if someone could help me with this ongoing problem, or any suggestions.

How much is the skeg bent? My understanding is that surface damage, like from something at idle speed, will reduce top end by 2-3 mph. If yours is bent, I'd say get it replaced. Even if that's not the culprit, it needs to be done.

I have to move the tabs down to about 3/4 before it stops porpoising. The skeg is bent enough that you can notice it when standing back looking at it. And it has a couple of small chips out of it with a little paint missing. LOW water in Lake St. Clair/ Anchor Bay area.
