Smile MX 6.2 (320) vs 496 (375)

Getting ready to order a new Baja 232 and was looking at upgrading from mx 6.2 (320hp) to the 496 (375hp) closed cooling.

I'm wonder what you people think about both these motors and what type of proformnumbers I can except from both.

What's the price difference between the two? I would opt for the 496 simple because it's a big block. Plus you will love the closed cooling. What type of price did you end up with and where will you be buying?

Definately go with the 496. You will be much better off unless the price difference is simply not acceptable to you.

There will be a weight penalty, of course, but it will perform much better. Top speed will not be greatly increased but will be a respectable 4-5mph more. Don't let the relatively close hp numbers fool you. The 6.2 is making it's peak at much higher rpms which will lead to more troubles in the long-run. The 496 will cruise faster with less rpms. You will be turning a bigger prop and will probably cruise more efficiently...Plus the closed-cooling is a huge benefit. You can't go wrong with a big block...It's fairly new to the market(so is the 6.2 for that matter) but soon enough there will be plenty of upgrades available.

List price for the 496 upgrade is $3,900.
One dealer is offering it for $2800 the other is offering it at $3100

Total package is running between $47,000 and $51,000.
Still dealing with two dealers, neither one is moving much on the price.
I think it may be because they have to order this boat.

I would like to get the 496 option and everything else for around $49,500.
I think I could live with that number.
Hope to have it finished my weeks end.

Any input would be helpful.

Hey bcoffield,
The differences that I'm coming up with between the 6.2(320hp) and the 496Mag(375hp) is between 2050 and 2188 list. I'm sure the dealers are just trying to make a little extra. Also, I don't know if any other installation differences there may be. Anything around 2500 is reasonable for the upgrade. This is assuming both are pushing a Bravo1, same exhaust options(captain call, etc. )

For further info try logging onto www.teambajamarine.com

There is a guy there using a screenname "abajadealer" He may be able to shead some more light on this matter for you.

Good Luck!

Both dealers have 3 or 4 232’s in stock and are looking to move them NOT ordering a new one.

The more I get into this shopping for a new boat the more I realize that boat dealers are only a few steps above used car salesman.

Baja Daze

Just found a Baja 232 2000 model year "NEW" never titled with 8 hours on engine and the following options:

Mercury 454 MAG MPI, Bravo I, SS prop, 385 HP/OER, Capt. cal Thru 502 MPI, Clarion Quake system, Depth Finder, Compass, Toilet upgrade-pump out, Boss Package, additional battery tray w/ switch and Custom eagle trailer dual axle’s w/brakes and brake flush.

$40,000 for boat
$ 3,700 for trailer

What you take on this offer and what do you know about the 454 MAG (385HP)?

I definately agree with Red Stripe!
That is a hell of a deal. There's a ton of $options$ on that boat and I wouldn't let that one slip away. 8 hours is nothing.

The 454 Mag is an awesome engine package. You can't go wrong with 385hp and the 454Mag has nothing but the best high-performance, durable internal parts(forged cranks, high-tension bolts, severe duty valves, etc) You won't regret it.
