On my dad's 29 Outlaw we used a rail mount and attached it to the grab rail on the drivers side by the bench seat. Used a 3ft stainless antenna. It's out of the way and doesn't look bad when its up. I'll look and see if I have any pictures that show it.

I did it on a 2000 Baja 272 and it turned out great.
The key is to pick a spot where you have easy access to front and back sides.
I mounted an Icom M402 in the cuddy as you enter on the left bulk head. Took the glove box out and marked the spot and measured inside and out before cutting. Cut with a jig saw and flush mounted the radio. I then mounted a command mic at the helm and could use the radio from both locations.
On the radio I mounted on the starboard side above the rub rail and below the windshield frame. I took off the accessory switch panel so I could access the back, measured carefully, and drilled four holes for the Shakespear Stainless bracket. I put a piece of plywood backing on the inside to give it strength. I then drilled a hole for the antenna cable and put a stainless clam clamp (forget what they call it) to give it the finished look. I used the 3 ft stainless antenna and it looked and worked GREAT. Very easy to raise and lower from the helm.
Sorry, no pictures, I sold the boat last month.
