Baja 272 or 25 Outlaw???
I am selling my Checkmate ZT240 to go bigger. I like the 272 and am very familiar with it. Couple friends have them with 454mags. It seems to have more room than the 25 Outlaw. Which boat performs better in the rough water and what kind of speeds. Both boats would have 502mags. Is the 272 a 25 foot boat with a platform? I needs pros and cons of each....thanks

Attitude,
There's not a whole lot of difference between the two. They are basically the same length(minus the 272/5 swim platform.
The 25 is said to have a better ride(I would concur) than the 272/5. The 272/5 weighs 4400# while the 25 weighs 4750#.
The big difference you will notice is that the 272 has a few more inches between the front bolsters and the rear bench(just a bit more roomier because the sunpad/engine hatch is pushed back some onto the swim platform area)
Other than that, it's just pure styling preference.

I sold my 272 and got a 25 Outlaw. Like daze said there is a little more cockpit room in the 272 but the cuddy is bigger in the 25. The 25 definitaly handles the rough better, no chine walk and runs faster in the rough. My 272 was a great boat but it flew the bow very high on launches and chine walked at WOT. Mine had a 502 MAG and ran around 65MPH. The 25 has a 496HO and runs 67-68 everyday with a best ever of 70.

nothing different here - I own a 272 Shooter. Almost idential in length to the O/L 25 with the swim platform. I have never had any problems with chine walk - just need to use the tabs a bit. Personally, i think the ride is about the same between the two - can't go wrong with either choice. I bought the 272 over the O/L for two reasons: (1) cockpit room; and (2) I got a heckuva deal on mine used and spent the extra $ upgrading the motor. With a 502 Mag you'll see 65 - 67 in a 272. I am curently running 75 - 77 with a 530 hp N/A 509.

I struggled with the same decision, and actually was leaning towards the Outlaw. But hard to find one under 40K. It is a newer style, has nice hard lines, I like the monster gauges, but you may have to sacrifice a little room. In my opinion the 272 cuddy is a little bigger, and the cuddy door is a little nicer, and it has more room for passengers.
But it is your decision, pound for pound, for the same year boat, same engine and options, for the same price, I would buy the Outlaw, although I am very happy with my 272.
Good luck hunting

The 272 and 25 Outlaw are both the most popular boats in Baja's lineup. Middle of the road price, easy to trailer and dock, good ride and enough room to overnight.
I just sold a 2000 Baja 272 with 502 Mag that I loved. I wanted a 25 Outlaw, wife liked the 272 better, I did not argue. The 272 will chine walk though when you trim it out for top speed. We took ours on the Miami to Key West poker run and it would handle the rough very well.
The wife told me in December that it was time for a new boat. I asked what kind and she had already decided on a 36 Outlaw. She had three requirements and I picked all other options.
1) 500 EFI's
2) Vacu-Flush Head
3) Triple Rear Bolster Seat
I think she is a keeper. I hope she wants to keep this one a while. Three boats in four years is breaking me.
Pick the boat that best fits your needs. They are both great. Just buy all the engine you can afford.

Big outlaw fan, but i've got a boss 272, go figure. I got a pretty good deal and was able to hop up a little. I'm running a 502 mildly built, with a pro-charger. I run up around 77 to 80 without any handling problems. We spend the night on ours some, and the amount of room is pretty good. Although, I am in the process of feeding it steroids hoping it will turn into a 29 outlaw.

Both are great boats. I own a '98 Boss 272 w/ a professionally built, balanced and blue-printed 502 incorporating an M1 Procharger. Before we bought this one (great deal) I wanted a 25 OL. The wife, however, had to have a built-in swim platform. She shares the same love of boating as I do (we log over 175 hrs a year ---- in IL!) My 272 will do 83mph (on a reg. Gaffrig speedo). I love the boat!
I do experience chine walking. It a pretty scary thing at 80 mph. I don't know if external steering will do the job so I'm doing some research.
With the whine of the super charger and the growl of the thru hull exhaust (capt's call) I get alot of looks and "thumbs up" w/ my 272!
Your choice ---either way ---- at least it's a Baja!!!!!
good luck!
