A 2000 38-foot FastTech Formula boat reported missing from near the 20-mile marker on the main channel was discovered floating in a slip at the 13-mile marker after it had been stripped clean. Authorities believe the thieves may have tried to sink the boat, but were foiled by Formula's built-in floatation. Photos courtesy Charlie Meyer TowBoatU.S.
LAKE OF THE OZARKS ' The investigation into a boat found near the 12-mile marker has turned into a theft investigation after Missouri Water Patrol officers discovered someone had stripped the vessel and tried to sink it to the bottom of the lake.
Investigators are hoping that someone may have seen something that would help locate the thief or thieves, possibly preventing more incidents at the lake.
Stripping a boat and sinking it is something the Water Patrol has come across in theft cases in other parts of the state, but it is not typical for Lake of the Ozarks, officers said.
From what the investigating officers have been able to piece together, the boat was owned by a dealer in Quincy, Ill. He had last seen the white 2000 Formula on April 15.
At that time, the 38-foot boat was on a hoist in the dock at his residence at The Villas at Shawnee Bend near the 20-mile marker on the main channel.
According to the Water Patrol, the thieves had pulled the boat completely out of the water, stripped it, drilled holes in the bottom and loaded the bow with rocks.
The thieves then launched the boat and were apparently hoping to sink it to the bottom of the lake.
Instead, officers said the flotation inside the boat caused it to stay afloat. The boat may have gone down and then come back up.
Everything on the boat from the engines and drives to the interior console, cushions and accessories had been taken out of the boat.
The Water Patrol is asking anyone with information on the theft to contact their office at 573-751-3333.

Thanks. I've met the guy who has the one for sale at smugglers and had hoped it wasn't his. The news article only showed the area just ahead of the wind deflector. Bummer for the actual owner, but glad it wasn't the guy from Scope's boat.
