Always wear the kill switch. Everyone wears a jacket or stays at the dock. Saw a boating accident a very good swimmer could not swim 100 yards to shore in a 6 mile current after his boat tipped over. We could not find him to help, no jacket, took three days to find his body.

For everyday boating I would just as well put on full football gear when driving my car as put on a lifejacket when cruising the lake.
I guess it is horses for courses. We will often go out mid week when there are very few boats around and we are in the ocean in race boats though not in race mode.

Our rule is when in the race boat, wear race safety equipment, when in the other boats lifejackets are only used in the ocean or with young kids.

Kill switch is alway worn if we will be doing a high speed run.

Well since this post we had a boater on the river where I boat fall over board.
I dont know the whole story but I do know he didnt make it.

I was on the river the day they found him. Running in at WOT with three other performance boats. I was the only boat whos passengers were wearing life jackets.

Later that day I was out by the pavillion and there was a guy so drunk he couldn't climb back on his jetski.

I pulled over to him and he finnaly got on but had lost his lanyard. So I drove over and found it for him.

He was wearing his life vest but had it unbuckled so he would look cool.
Idiot!!

lucky he didn't drown

I am happy to see that alot of guys dont give crap what people think and use there safety equipment.

I will be getting a Working kill switch ASAP after reading all the replies.
And Here I thought I was being safe already.

For those of you who hate a lanyard connected to your vest or at your hip, Tres Martin sells a wrist band with a heavy plastic loop sewn in for your lanyard. Others may sell it as well, but I had never seen one before taking his class.

It gives you more range of motion around your cockpit and you won't forget it's there (and inadvertently kill the motor around the docks).
It works great. When not in use, leave it looped over your throttle. You'll never forget to put it on, and it will quickly become the habit.

I wonder what the liability factor is for an operator who has passengers not wearing life vests if theres an accident.

I know its like pulling teeth to get my passengers to wear them sometimes.
we dont wear them all the time but at least when crossing the sound I like to see them on.
