Law Enforcement & Mufflers
I just received the March 2005 edition of Hot Boat magazine. On the cover they have an announcement in bold yellow print stating "YOUR BOAT IS TOO LOUD!". They list the noise law limits by state in the article. We live in IL and the article states a 90dB limit using a stationary test. They also state that mufflers are required. We have one stock 454MAG w/ Captain's Call exhaust. One of test boat's had a stock 496MAG and idled at 91.5dB. I am not sure we are legal. Who out there is running mufflers? Is this year the year for aftermarket mufflers or this article geared for those boating in the state of California? I am looking to go faster with more horsepower not slowing our boat down with a restrictive muffling device.

here in west michigan a lot of boats use a elbow style tail pipe which puts the exhast under water at a idle, kind of ugly but it works.
