I had a local marine mechanic say thats how he times an engine, "BY EAR". And this same guy was working on a Nortech with Turbines that week. I wouldnt let him change my impeller.

Initial and carb idle adjustments can be done by ear.....if that is what they are referring to.

If they are referring to advance curve and total timing...then...well....their ears will hear it blow up at some point.

I don't usually use my ear. I use a screwdriver and my hand. Pretty tough to turn mixture screws with your ear.
