Cigarette Adventure 6.75
This year I pulled the motors in the spring and replaced the oil pans with deeper (10") and more capacity 14 qts pans. This finally and totally solved my oil pressure/ oil temp issues. Only took 4 years to figure out .
The 8" pans really have no business on a longer stroke engine. The counterweights/crank swings around and aerates the oil causing high temps and dropping oil pressure.
8" vs. 10" pan pickup
Pickup is protected from windage . New pans have 4 door baffles around pick up .
Old pans all open
Old set up when I bought the boat too much heat . Burned oil on piston bottoms.
New set up including piston oilers all look brand new after a season.
Hexadjust timing chains were a bad idea. One advanced itself 2* . Went back to the standard timing chain and retarded the cam 4*
Drive lower gears were wearing and got replaced along with a new prop shaft

Been experimenting with bravo props. The Maximus cruises better with less porpoise and gets on plane easier but top speed suffers. Hydromotive P5X had a lot of slip . Possibly some 4 or 5 blades may also work .. testing in progress.
Put on 2" spacers (now propshaft is 2" below hull) thought speed would suffer but it did not just the opposite ... I finally reached my goal of everyday 90mph boat .. not a glory run . Weird lunge at 85+mph disappeared .
7psi , all gear for 4 people ac fridge etc ...and half tank with everyday tune up.
Best speed so far is with 4 blade cleavers. 18x29 Would love to try some higher rake and 5 blades next
..
Oil pressure, AFRs , oil temp, knock, EGTs are all perfect now, feel like I`ve finally got a handle on everything . Feels good !! Glad I didn`t sell, she`s running like a champ !

Dan,
That's awesome. Maybe one day I will love my boat. The pictures are awesome, and thanks for the commentary.
Who does your drives? Or do you rebuild them by yourself?
I am down and out again, after 4 glorious hours of boating this season. We shall see if we can salvage it, anyways, BRAVO on gettting her dialed in, and I pray for you that it stays that way. Of I could reach your level, I would be a lot closer to heaven. We all know how much time you have into that boat in order to make it right. I require someone more competent than me to sort mine out. Want some side work???

Interested to hear more about what props you end up with. Thanks for the report on the spacers. I've often thought about doing the same to get the drives down a bit more to help with getting on plane.

Thanx Justin,
I send my drives to Speedmaster Inc or Collabella in Florida.
Either one is good at what they do.
Whats going on with yours now? I`m sorry to hear it`s down. If I wasn`t able to do all my own work I think nothing would ever get done right. Has to be frustrating with all these issues.
Vortech, do it . It helps planing and now the drives don`t come out of the water every 5 seconds . Deeper is less wear and tear imop as they stay hooked up. The other plus is less slip, gained 3-4 mph at cruise.
Didn`t scrub any speed and it does help carry the bow.
My boat just runs better with 2" below bottom.

Good work Dan. Boat has really came a long way . 90mph for a flatdeck thats non kevlar, full cabin with a/c, tons of family gear on board for overnighting, etc is stellar imo.
I think alot of us take for granted big power these days. 900hp isnt crazy by todays standards when talking about dyno numbers and bench racing. However, its still alot of power. To be able to have them, and idle around at 700rpm never loading up plugs, and basically act like stock HP500s around the marina, yet run them at 6000 rpm for extended periods over and over, and over again like you have the past 2 summers, and keep going back on the trailer running and ready for the next weekend, is something to talk about.
Youve ran the crap out of them, whether for prop testing, carb tuning, and so on. Not some big name engines, just a couple of blown 540s put together by some diy'ers.
The trials and tribulations of this adventure have been awesome. Some of the things that often get spouted to be gospel on the internet, we have found to not be true during alot of testing . Things like
Roots blowers make gobs of heat. (Not really)
Prop diameter is the key to getting on plane (not so much)
Iron heads , 8.5:1 non intercooled should be left to 5lbs boost and 32* timing (umm no)
Gapless rings keep blowby to a minimum (wrong again)
Air fuels in the high 10s will wash out the rings (nah)
Oil will get milky if oil temp never hits 212* (false)
Installing spacers will slow you down (nope)
Wont make any power with an off the shelf cam (silly)
And much more. The cool part , is learning all this stuff. The bad part, its alot of work, time, and money . But at the end of the day, you really made the boat look and run like it should. Now its time to kick back and enjoy it for a bit

Hope to get an engine back relatively soon and salvage what season is left.... Dan, per your experience, I think I am going to go grab 2" spacers, thanks for making me spend my money!
