Here's where you need to be.

Tell us if you want something to cover the engines or if you want something you can walk/lay on and that will help with materials & construction suggestions.

I've built several before and am in the process of building one for my 28 Cigarette SS. Depending on your budget, you have a number of options. As a base, you can use either plywood, KLEGECELL, or end-core balsa. First layer of glass should be something strong like woven roving, second layer, 10 ounce cloth or so, and final layer(s), chopmat to allow you to sand to a smooth surface. There are LOTS of glass and Kevlar options, this is just a simple old school way of constructing the hatch. Make sure you use laminatng resin and not finishing resin, especially for the earlier layers.

Origionally my friend was going to make my new hatch composite with carbon fiber finish . Then I've decided to go the cheaper and faster way with plywood. Got a 1"X8' two side good marine grade plywood . Doubled up at the perimeter and at the center with 1"X4" wide strips. Sprayed with epoxy primer to seal it against moisture , and finished painting it with PPG . Got two scoops from a local guy for 120 bucks each ,and reinforced it with an extra layer of mat to withstand some pressure , in case someone decide to step on it . The new hatch actually weighs half of what the original hatch did .The old hatch was padded with vinyl finish , high density foam and a stainless mirror inside.
