I wanted to return some of the "old school" look to my 81 Cigarette Squadron, but couldn't find anyway to get the long stainless steel vents (I needed 56"). So I bought 3 20" vents, and cut and spliced them. Was easier than I thought. The 20'ers are readily avialable, and this way if part of it gets damaged, I only have to replace a section, not the whole thing. The hole in the hull was already the right size.
It had some black plastic covers that had the cig emblem engraved in the center, but black plastic just didn't look right, and painted white wasn't much better. I thought about doing this for years - wish I hadn't waited!!!
