Cigarette 35 Raceboats

I think what Marco is trying to say here is, that the rise on the deck of the Outrageous and the Michelob light were different from the other Scarabs.
That boat had a slight taper, from the front to the back under the windscreen, before it started down the side of the boat, as can be seen in these photos.
The last photo shows the boat as it was being restored and you can clearly see the taper in that shot.
BTW Ratman no longer owns the boat, it is owned by a HORBA member who also owns the old 35 Cigarette ...Daddy Cool. The Scarab has been restored and was recently raced in Key West.

This for a simple fact; That Scarab was the only one among all the Scarab 38' from competition to have the rise of the deck in front of the cockpit with the two edges beveled by a transversal cut.
This made part of the stamp of the deck and not a change subsequently done.
That same particularity also had him the Mr Terrible of Herbst.[/QUOTE]
Marco: I`m not sure where we are heading with the Scarab thread which you give me a headache trying to recall all the boats I was associated with. Here is the real deal. Mr. Terrible is NOT the Joey Ipp. Michelobe scarab. Joey had 2- 38` Scarabs, I raced and was affiliated with both, One I rigged with Bobby Beich, the other I think was rigged by Bobby Moore??????? ( Outragous ) I was the one that convinced Larry Smith to put inserts in the deck mold to knock the corners off the raise in the deck, we had intended to make air inlets on the flat where corners were. If you look in HORBA pictures and carefully look at the two different boats you will see one has corners cut and exhaust throught the actual deck. The other boat is square at deck with exhaust through the actual transom. two separate boats. The original boat was lost in the Gulf Stream between Miami and Bimini, was later found in a shrimp net of the coast of Louisiana, maybe a year after she went down, was still loaded with pot. I have no idea where it ended up after that, but I was called regarding any info. I might have, she still had the Aeromarine F.I. motors in her. The cut corner boat evidentally is the other later boat which is being restored. Mr. Terrible was either rigged by John Connor or Freddie Miller, I think Connor throttled the boat for Herbst and I believe it was an entire red gelcoat boat. There were plenty of Scarabs around in Calif., Gentry had a couple, one ended up with Vic Edelbrock, the other is the boat we raced in Argentina, and the same boat that blew the front end of in Pt. Pleasent with Kieth Hazel on the sticks.. Betty Cook had two. Honcho was a 38` Scarab not sure of origin. same guy also had 41` Apache also Honco. Can`t think of his name, Pete something, I`ll remember when I finish this quote.
As far as who was first with the Kevlar and High tech. building, I think more research has to be done, the first couple Bertrams were glass boats which delaminated. I built one of the first Kevlars for Benihana the number 5 boat this after Smitty, the boat hull and deck weighed in at 2,900# It`s the boat I got thrown out of in St. Pete same race Joey Ipp. got thrown out. Almost killed me, Joey and I were in the same E.R. together, he was making me laugh and I had a rib sticking out of my side and one lung working at the time.
I guess at some point we will all have the history of all the Cigs., Scarabs, and Bertrams put in order, should keep all occupied for awhile, then we can start on all the cats, which is a whole big era and important historically. By the way, we need someone to record all this historical info. in the correct sequence with correct info. from here, should be part of HORBA. Feel free to volunteer. 7XCHAMP
