Is it 4"? I know that on my buddy's cig he has the merc trans and he has probably less then 2" infront of the engines so i do remember it being an issue in upgrading them...

I was involved with rerigging and racing (throttle man) Miss Cigarette back in 1996-97. The 406cu.in. small blocks put out 425HP and 400+ Ft.Lbs. torque all day. I ran the boat very hard and never had issues with the merc trans. I did run Amsoil ATF in them with the standard cooler.
The current owner Greg Zatco runs it with 383's at about the same HP and still hasn't had a trans problem.

I had them too in a Scarab with Big Blocks. The biggest problem was that the oil cooler line was plumbed with a small water line (1/4 inch) coming from the seawater pump through the transmission base and out to an elbow on the drain port of the exhaust riser. Cast Iron Riser water jackets start to plug up and shuts off the water off......No oil cooler. I took my lines off the risers and replumbed them overboard. I have 2 as well for sale.
