Also look at the length of the prop shaft. About 1985 there were long and short shafts, both 19-spline. The long shafts are like the SSMIII drives and there's quite a few props floating around. The Short shafts are getting a little harder to find quality props.

There was also a change in the some of the castings, but I think they were later builds, but there is a "teardrop" gimbel that has a casting all the way up and incorporates the trim cylinder mount into the gimbel, those are most desirable. There's also an "investment" cast "lower unit", and it's fin is thin more like a Mercury, those are nice, but again, I think they were later in the 80's.

Also, twin cylinder steering is desirable. Mine has single, and it's not an issue, but twin is cool.

They're great drives, will generally give you 5-7 mph over an equally powered TRS and the same or a couple over SSM drive.

Mine was the "375 hp" model with the round Gimbel and single steering. I bought the setup in I'CE's post a couple of years ago, complete with Kaama props, and I am converting the old Scarab to the newer style setup/ Awesome posts! Very Cool drives!
