Garmin GPSmap 478
Got this unit for the boat last August. Upon messing with the box and accessories before a trip out to Pittsburgh last week I noticed the car adapter. (thing works totally awesome in the truck, amazing how smart it is)!
Anyone know how in the world this thing plugs into the unit? I mean, it is a totally foreign looking plug, matches NONE of the possible plugs on the back or bottom of the GPS. I used the hard wire plug (harness) for the boat.
Little help?

I have the 478. I'm a bit confused by your question, as my car/cigarette power adapter (if that's what you're talking about) plugs into the same location as the hard wired harness does. It is a round looking connector underneath the antenna protected by the rubber cover. Are you sure the adapter for the truck is the right type? Do you think you might have accidentally got the wrong adapter from the factory?
All three of my power sources (cigarette, hard-wired, wall adapter) use the same plug under the antenna on the back.
Hope that helps...
John

Yeah, mine is not the round plug with two tiny "bars" on it, it's like, flat and looks like it slides into a groove. I'm going to go to West Marine today and have them open up a new box to see what the deal is.
The manual doesn't mention this style adapter.

From Garmins web site on the 478
What's in the Box:
GPSMAP 478
Preloaded U.S. marine detail maps (g2 technology)
Preloaded City Navigator NT North America maps (full coverage)
Trip & Waypoint Manager
USB cable
Power/data cable
Marine mount
Automotive mount
Universal friction mount
Vehicle power cable
AC charger
Protective cover
Owner's manual
Sounds like the cable you are looking at is the usb cable but that should not have a cigarette plug on other end all that power cords shoul be thae same rounf plug. Th usb cable plugs in right below it if it has a cig plug on other end dont do it something doesnt seem right
Quick reference guide

Nah, I see the USB down there, that isn't the problem.
The issue is with the actual AC adapter that came with the kit, it doesn't "plug" into anything. It's a FLAT, 7 pronged connector, looks like it would need to slide into something rather than plug.

Ah, I can't view attached images, too cheap to get around to paying for a real membership.
I will find out this afternoon, I'm going to have them check for me straight out of a new box.

Yup, somehow I ended up with the wrong one in the box from the factory (I guess)
West Marine is like Wally World, liberal return policy.
He took a look at the rest of the Garmin models there and it didn't look like it fit anything else they had on the shelf. Said they could work it out with Garmin easily, just grabbed one out of one of the 478's on the rack. From what I hear they are easy to deal with, so even if I had to do it myself it would have worked out either way I guess.
Thanks for the tips.
