Several yrs ago I toasted my pump. Went to Autozone and bought a regular pump and installed it. Worked as good as what I took off for the following few yrs I owned that boat.

Couldn't find one where the tank that had the same return hose location as my orignal, so I just put the new guts in my old pump housing.

Stock merc pump will be fine. You might have to drill out the orifice a little to flow enough at idle. I would use an external tank and get the top of the PS pump welded shut with a bunge installed to go the ext. tank.
