I've had both and never had an issue with either. I'd have to go with more HP.... 500 EFI.

Yes, one is a marinized GM engine and the other is a blueprinted performance engine with better parts inside- and a pricetag commensurate with those features.

You get what you pay for. In the end, the 500 is going to be more receptive to performance increases without having to replace everything. And everyone ends up there anyway.

both have steel cranks and rods, have a friend that just turned his mag motor into a 500efi with a 525 cam.

THE 502 BLACK is what I have the best on the dyno was 647 hp with a 850 dart in , new heads balanced hdy roller cam bored to 509 or 510? I forget but its just as go as the blue motor the blue has the same heads but better r rockers, its balanced but not worth 10,000 more. I wish I took the 10500 I paid for my 502 back in 93 or 94 and had a tall deck built from the start. now I am having a 572 I bought in pieces put together with some new parts and I will have less money in that than I put in the 509 and the 572 has all the real good parts in it making over 1000hp. so the newer black motors had a roller rockers and hdy rollar cam, you could change the intake to dart, lifters spring cam, carb $2400, exhaust to. and make 550 to 600hp, save thousands over the blue. or if you have blue 500 with carb, change cam, lifters, carb opt stock is 800, up grade to 850 or 1050, a custom 1050 is worth 30hp over a 800, as long as the cam is big.and you will pick up 75 to 125hp. the custom cam I have now is close to a 741 crane but better, my builder can get me another 75hp with a bigger cam new custom intake, and have the new custom carb already which would be 700 to 725hp but hdy roller cam instead of roller like the S cat 750 motors, the intake is the magic plus a lil head work my heads are after market. if anyone wants to know what I had done there was a lot my stock 502 went from 390hp to 585hp, 596hp then 647hp then 667hp where its now and going to do the custom intake plus cam and shot for 700 to 725. for my back up motor, hope to have the 572 done by dec hoping for 1050hp with 93 oct gas and more with smaller pulley and race fuel. the 509 runs 9.5 to 1= 93 octane you could get away with 10 to 1 with 93= more power
