SBC Vortec heads....Porting questions
I'm prepping a set of Vortec 062 heads for assembley. I have pocket ported the heads removing only the material around the valve seats that shroud the valve and cleaning up the castings in the runners and bowls. I have also gasket matched the intake ports only. I don't have a flow bench available to test heads flow so no numbers available...sorry. I've got a few guys telling me that there was absolutely nothing to gain by porting the vortec heads...I say There is a significant amount of valve shrouding in the bowl and the ports aren't even close to the gasket profile...Everything is free flowing now and intake ports/gaskets/and head ports all match. Has anyone run any ported vortec heads and if so what are the results?

The vortec head has a swirl chamber design to maintain high flow velocity. they are somewhat limited in port volume. pocket porting will increase the port voume making it capable of flowing more with higher valve lifts and still maintaining the high swirl chamber design. not the best choice head for higher rpm but great for low and midrange torque in a single engine boat. Just for info: the high swirl/ vortec design is a take-of from nascar on restricter plate tracks
