You have to suck it out. The front and rear are separate and you have to do both sides. The front has the dipstick and the rear has a pipe plug. I always just used a 30cc plastic syringe with a 1/4" clear hose on the end to suck out the lube. Each side only holds a few ounces. Just use Merc HP drive lube to refill it.
Frequent lube changes are the secret to keeping the small blowers alive. Do it at least every 50 hrs.

Yes, they are completely separate areas independent of each other.
I don't even think its that much, but its impossible to get it all out, so that may be what it is when its 100% empty.
Also, make sure to change the lube in the seapump fuel pump. It gets fuel diluted too. Use the HP gear lube as well. Can't even suck it out unless you remove the fuel pump.. It has to be dumped out, unless you have the newer model that has a plug on the bottom.
