I ran mine locked at 34* on a fairly radical 454. It helped the idle and dock manners quite a bit with a nasty cam. On my 425's I've never messed with it.

I run my procharged setup locked @ 28...helps low speed...now going to megasquirt and EFI so can control timing at whatever RPM I want...will run even more at low speed and back it off as the RPM's and boost come up...

I run mine locked. Switched it a few years ago, in the attempt to clean the idle up. It worked.

I now use MSD6 Programable. The unit is a pain in the azz to figure out and MSD tech line is less than sympathetic and even less helpful. However once you get the plotting figured out you can adjust the timing 25 degrees. Can can add or retard timing electronically with a lap top and it has built in rev limits etc..

I run locked 35* on my high strung 454's. Day and night difference for idle and docking.

I'm locked at 34 on my well built 524 at 10:1 compression. I was concerned about eating starters, I crank it before I goose the throttle. It idles and performs significantly better. I've tried limiting advance to 10 degrees total advance with custom bushings to get more timing at idle and I've also tried MSD start retard boxes. Both were a waste, no problems under extreme loads either. I was trying a bigger prop when my wife decided to plan a family outing on the lake, 8 adults and coolers and no problems in late August heat.
