What oil ratio do you use in your gas winterization mix? I have a 454, but it's probably the same for most motors.

I'm assuming you are referring to what mixture you run through the engine. If so, mine is:

5 gallons of gas, 2 quarts of 2-stroke oil, 6 ounces of fuel stabilizer

So essentially 10:1 ratio? I used a 20:1 ratio. I hope that will be good enough to coat things.

If carbed I fill the fuel water seperator with 40:1. When exhaust starts to smoke then shut off engine.
Pssst: 40:1 is what I run in all my 2 stroke engines.

way to much - Volvo Penta did a lot of testing and 50 to 1 was best without alot of deposit formation and spark plug fouling. All 2 strokes outboards are recommended at 50 to 1 as well. Never seen a 2 stroke outboard corrode from the inside out on inland waters and very few and I mean very few boat owners winterize their 2 stroke outboards nor have shops winterize them either.

When mixing the oil ratio in the water sep fuel filter only --- one will never get a proper winterized mix because fresh gas is continuously entering the filter through out the whole capacity as soon as the engine is stated.

The lowest I would go would be 35 to 1 especially if it was a 496.

Good question. I made it through years with doing nothing then eventually went to spray fogging oil at a high idle through the carb til it snuffed the engine out. Never had any problems either way.

50:1 in 5 gal remote can for my 496HO. Tried Merc's 10:1 ratio and it too much. Nearly fouled the plugs with oil.

Been following Merc's recipe for the past 5 years without a problem. YMMV.

If carbed, I just dump 10W-30 down the carb until it starts smoking then keep pouring until the engine dies. This outs a heavy does of oil everywhere. In the spring when I fire it up, the engine will smoke for 5 minutes at idle but it eventually clears up.
