Are the Sierra cap and rotor of any quality? Will they last about as long and be resistant to corrosion? There is about a $50 difference between OEM and Sierra. I know not to buy the $25 ones from Amazon. Somebody makes the Merc PN as well as the PN for Sierra. I see Mallory (presumably a trusted name brand) has a part number but all I can find is "Replaces Mallory 9-29318" and not the actual Mallory Branded PN.

Yeah I get it that the Merc is likely somewhat better but is it $50 better, its job is to deliver the correct amount of energy at the correct time and last X amount of time. Is Sierra any better than he other China stuff? Not all stuff from China is bad, just depends on what QC and specs they adhere to. For all we know the Merc part is China made.

I usually just buy AC Delco ones from the auto parts store and change them yearly.

When I go to the parts counter what do I tell them to look up a cap and rotor for or AC PN? Seems like a much better choice than using some China stuff or at least an unknown quality standard. I would be comfortable with AC Delco a quality, maybe....

beware we have seen many center tangs on the rotor break off its quite flimsy from many china factories

Thanks, I feel like I am asking questions everyone else with an MPI already knows as general knowledge. I would probably know this as well if I had an MPI over the years, I am working on my son's boat. My knowledge base is mild built 502's Holley 800's B&M 250 etc.

Yes, according to AutoZone the ones I listed are correct for a 98 5.7 Chevy 1500 Pickup, MPI.
Thanks, I will order those and get at least a known QC standard with AC Delco. I think it is likely still China made but at least it has some manufacturing specs to adhere to.

I use Jegs or Summit both have brass terminals and seem to last a good while.

ACCEL Distributor Cap And Rotor - 8132

Most local auto parts stores carry it. All your online speed shops do too.

Also, Crusader Marine has cheaper parts than the other marine engine manufacturers. Their cap/rotor is brass too and with some online searching, sone stores can usually be much less than others.

Those of you who have switched to brass terminals; have you noticed less corrosion on the distributor under the cap? This year I just changed out with a new GM distributor and wondered if the corrosion in the old one has something to do with the aluminum terminals. Could that the corrosion get its start from a pretty massive loss of aluminum terminal material? I have never boated around saltwater. FWIW, the latest GM replacement distributor works well as a replacement for the original. I will be glad to dig up the part number if anyone wants it.

If anyone is interested, the new GM number for the distributor used on the old MEFI motors is 19420969. The number is the same for GM or AC Delco. For not that much more than the cost of a good ignition module, you can buy the whole distributor. Confirmed this works well on a 2000 502 MPI. I did switch the distributor gear from the old distributor to be on the safe side (it did look a little different) but I am pretty sure that it's the right gear for the roller cams in these.
