They wanted me to be the first 38ZR boat with the Ilmor 625's but, after considering all the reviews and performance of the Ilmor's and comparing them to the 600SCi's and being they are equal in power and torque - I didn't feel comfortable enough with the only drives available with the Ilmor's were the Teague Platinum Drives and that they were still working on the service network for the package. Not that I haven't ventured in uncommon power and drive package's before (My 38 Daytona has Innovation Marines 650hp for power and B-MAX drives) I felt the Mercury Racing power and drive package is a proved set-up and the fact that I would always get the same performance power regardless of conditions was my final determining factor. Plus the fact the 525's are understated in power and they were running 90-92mph I didn't think the Ilmor's had the cost justification.
I guess I am lucky that they already have an Ilmor servive center close to my house. Also they guy that owns the dealership races with Bob Teague in a Donzi 38 ZR with the teague drives. He has not had any problems in 2 seasons of racing with that drive. I know they are way harder on the drives than I will ever be. Aren't the 600s about the same price of the Ilmor? When will your boat be ready? Any recommendations on options for the boat when I order it?
What speeds will you run with the 600s? I have a ride in the 38 with Ilmors in 9 hours. I can not sleep, the anticipation is killing me!!!!!!!

Ride was very nice. The bay was flat which sucked. But with probably 100 gallons of gas and 2 guys on board I was driving her at 92mph. I did not trim the boat all the way out so I was not hitting 6000rpm. He says trimmed out it will do 95-96mph. I will be ordering one in the next couple of months after I sell my Fountain 38LX. I have a ride in a 38 ZR with the 525s in the next couple of weeks so I will see the how they are.

I loved the sound!!! I did not trim the boat all the way out and was turning 5600rpm, I think when Mike drove it he had it right to the 6000 limit. I have had alot of communication with the guys at Ilmor and I will be using their motor hands down. Give me your e-mail address and I will send you a little video of the boat at the dock idling.

Great video, that boat looks and sounds great. If you order one are you going to get the rear bench seat or the bolsters? They say those bolsters weigh an additional 350 lbs. That has a be a few mph.
