If you are talking about the pre-2000 and post 2000-2008, the cabins are altogether different as well as the cockpits, transom and swim platforms as well.
as for your choices of Formula, Powerquest, and Donzi......all very good choices for quality boats. personally I am a fan of the Donzi's, this is our second one. I am a big fan of having twin 350 MAGS, very fuel efficient (almost 3 mpg), great ride in 4 ft chop, 6's okay but I dont push her too hard in that stuff. Trueser's 28ZX Scorpion is a very nice boat with a ton of options and runs low to mid 80's, whereas my 350's push in the low 70's range.
good luck in your search, make a decision quick, summer is here,

I no know what my 288 did in the conditions and id explain it as fun if your young and survivable if your middle aged LOL

I have ridden in a '98 28zx, single screw 540 w/about 600hp, seems to run just a little wet, bow is lower than the post 2000 28zx's. smaller length in the cabin in the pre 2000's, seemed to be about the same height. you sit just a little bit closer to the bow in the pre's. couldnt tell you about ride in the pre's in the rough stuff, was on fairly calm water.

The older top deck is kinda ugly, the hull bottoms are the same... so if you want a deal to go fast get an older top deck boat. There is a mega price difference between the two.
I think for ride and balance you'll find that the top deck won't change it but singles Vs. twins will.

I don't think it is fair to compare an older single to a newer twin. The weight is different so the balance is different. They didn't make many singles past 2000. All the ones I have seen with singles and the new top deck have been budget 502 or 496 Mag boats for guys that live on lakes or just don't want to go as fast / spend the $$ on twins.

And they rode differently? I would think the 496 boat would ride the flattest / bow lowest. very interesting if the opposite is true!
