Default Bravo Rear Cover Removal

When removing the rear cover that houses the shift mechanism must the drive oil be drained before cover removal?

pull the lower plug and drain a cpl of quarts ... if it hasn't been changed in a while be a good time to change the oil ...also when replacing the oil you need to pump in from the bottom ......m
