Default XR drive / prop question

I'm trying to prop a boat that has a XR drive. My standard Bravo props seem to have too much rotational "play" and I'm wondering if I'm missing a part? Any help?

I am pretty sure the XR has a different prop shaft made for square bore props.

I did a quickie google, there is a 1 1/4 inch hub kit you need to make the bravo props work...

Yep. XR's have a larger prop shaft. But if your prop insert is from a regular bravo then it shouldn't fit at all. If you have "play" then I would seem your trying to put an XR insert on a regular bravo shaft.

Is that the "prop insert" in my photo? It came with the drive and there is not any play between the splined shaft and the insert. The play is between the insert and the prop. The prop is a standard Merc piece. Do I need the 1-1/4" hub kit and where would I get one?

Yes, that is the prop insert. However, the "Flo-Torque" style props are all the same, it's the inserts that change.

You can tell if you have the 1 1/4" propshaft by if the splines are a larger diameter than the threaded portion of the shaft. It steps down at the threads because the nuts are the same for both the 1" and 1 1/4" propshafts.

There are 4 plastic pieces that fit into the recessed spots on your prop insert. I didn't think that it would matter if they were gone but apparently it does. The little sleeve are only a couple $$$ and it sounds like you need them. Go to Mercruiserparts.com and look them up for a part number...then you can order them from your local dealer. (or just buy from that web site.)

Bingo - 500hps is right, snubber strips are missing. Do not leave home without them.
