TRS & 72c Allignment Process (Help Champ)
Think about it…..the yokes (U joints) and shaft on the drive is controlled by the round boss on the drive, that fits into the transom plate, and that must align with the gimbal bearing in the trans tailshaft…..
If you stick the drive in with out the trans in you would get a better idea what I mean.
Just ask this:
What is the specific tool that is needed to get the rear of the trans aligned to the transom assembly so that the drive lines up true to the transmission.

What you are saying is true on drives without trannies. On drives with trannies the alignment is different. First the rear bearing in the tail of the trannie is called a output bearing. The tail shaft is aligned to the bellhousing on the transom assembly. The mercury alignment tool for this includes a disc that sides over the alignment tool shaft and fits into the opening in bellhousing. If the gimble ring is worn and has settled it will change the alignment. It is important to check the condition of the ring and measure the gap the ensure it has not settled before you take the time to align the motor and install the mounts plates.

There is a disc that slides over the alignment bar. This disc fits into the bellhousing where the large o-ring would be located.
Insert the bar into the trans tailstock and adjust the motor up or down until the disc fits easily into the groove on the bellhousing.

Engine Alignment
Dont forget, the tailstock, trans, and engine are one unit. They are bolted solidly together. After the tailstock is bolted to the transom unit, the only adjustment available is front engine mounts. This is adjusted to accomodate the Mercruiser alignment Tool for a smooth fit before drive is installed. Gently use alignment tool. If you ram it in there, you can dislodge the plug in the coupler....Presto...no more oil. Good luck
