Default Xr Swap Help

Ok, so like everyone told me, my standard bravo on the back of a heavy single engine failed for the second time in about a year. I'm in the process of looking for a XR. My question is, if I get the mercruiser PN# 30-862540A2, wich is the gimble bearing conversion kit, can I use my current transom assembly and gimble housing? I was told this was all I needed , is this true? This is the first time I make this swap so I'm kinda in the dark. Thanks.

What year is the Housing, and is it a HP housing? Just curious but really all you need to do is change the gimble bearing and you are good to go.....you may already have an upgraded bearing in there ...look after wiping the grease away and check for a red dot @ 10:00 if so you have the propper bearing

Not sure if that is the proper part number but a bearing swap is all that is needed to except the XR input shaft.

Yes, that is the correct kit. Has everything you need. You can see a photo here:

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/partsByNumber.asp

Rear cover will fit, just will not match the profile cosmetically.

PS - we have both old & new style on the shelf

I just installed one last night.

Don't forget the spacers in the trim cylinders.

I also read a Mercruiser service bulletin from September 2000. It has a page about replacing the U-joint Bellows Sleeve with a new Bellows Sleeve part no. 862209.

There was a previous post to this question saying this should only be a problem on late 90's early 2000 models.

My RED dot was more like the 11:30 position. When I installed I just made sure the grease hole lined up. I always put a black line on the bearing to make sure its lined up. I don't know how it ended up at 11:30.

I started mine last night, ran it for 10 minutes, turned the wheel all the way to the right and left, trimed up and down.
Then I took the outdrive off to check for any clearance issues. (no metal shavings or shinny spots)
Looked fine so I am going to splash it Friday.
