Default SSM II to a SSMIII

Now, Im more curious than anything, but something has sparked my interest.

I have a 402 Formula with TRS. Orginially the boat was equipped with SSMII. So my x dimension is considerably high with the TRS. Boat also has a notched transom.

A buddy of mine has a pair of #3 drives sitting around. We were talking about my boat, and the TRS being weak with 600HP engines.

According to what I have found, the #3 would put my propshaft 3/4" higher than the SSM II setup. With my TRS, I am 2" higher than the ssmII setup, so going to #3's would drop me back down another 1.25"?

Already have access to the #3 drives for a song, and Ive been seeing tailstocks and gimbles for ssm III's going fairly cheap on the used market.

I know I would have to enlarge the transom cutout, and relocate motor mounts, swap tailstocks, etc.

I would love to just go to konrads, but thats not in my budget. The 402 is a great boat, but not much market for them to dump 20+grand into the drives. Just wondering if going this route would work, and if im missing something. Main concerns seem to be the x dimension issues. Anyone know how high the x was on the older non stepped notched cigs were with #3's?

You would be doing a tremendous amount of work swapping to a drive system that's discontinued and extremely difficult to find parts for.

It's not uncommon for a guy running the older Speedmasters to be down for an entire season when they have a problem.

Before you do the swap, try to locate repalcement gear sets for the SSM III

Also, you are not as high as you think. The TRS is 24.2" from input shaft to prop shaft (SSMII is 25.122")

The TRS is .922" higher than the SSM II

Hope this info helps,

Kurt

Yea, good point Kurt. I see Konrad makes a replacement for the SSM III also now, which is pretty cool.

I was just thinking out loud, as converting to the #III drives would cost me next to nothing initally. But it seems like I either pay now or pay later, to have a bulletproof drive setup. Prob better off saving my pennies and getting the konrads.
