Default TRS drive oil resevoir question

I was changing the drive oil on our new to us Top Gun, and I noticed the hose that goes from the gimble to the drive lube resevoir is rock hard on both drives. Is it supposed to be like this or is it 15 years of use/heat cycles that made it hard? The boat is a 1993, when we were running it this past weekend we had a problem where the starboard drive was puking drive oil out of the breather on the top of the resevoir too, any thoughts on that as well? Was the resevoir just overfilled or is this hose that is rock hard not letting the fluid drain back down into the drive? Pics are attached with arrows pointing to the hose in question.

hose is hard because it is old. probably puked oil from overfilling. the resevoir is more of a lube monitor than a reserve for the drive. don't run it too high

if you've got a bad seal in your drive or a bad nylon washer around the lower drain plug the drive could be eating water and blowing excess into your resevoir. what does the lube look like? milky? - jeff

Drive oil was dark, not milky and no water came out. Will monitor drive/oil next time out to see if it pukes out again. Right now it is right at the fill level on the resevoir dipstick.

Had same problem back in early 80's. A six inch piece of 1/8 brass pipe with brass coupler between res. and vent solved problem. Hose should also be changed. If hose is collapsed inside from old age pressure from drive will force oil into res. but gravity will not allow it to push back
