Wow, you are lucky it was just slipping at higher loads. I bet it was just a short time from complete loss of connection and a tow in. I have never had a coupler fail and have run put to 625 HP thru the 3 ear design but boat was not airborne. I always assumed they failed due to an catching air or ground strike. I know they will fail earlier if drive is misaligned.

Misalignment is, from my experience, the number 1 death sentence of couplers. I've spent 2 hours trying to to get alignment perfect instead of being "good enough" and running it

Yeah, I believe I have a good feeling for things happening whiledriving and a quick response. As soon I fellt some slip I pulled the throttle back.
And also I hit some big waves before where I felt that the engine spun up a bit.
So I guess it's all a combination of everything, since the engine was quite missaligned when I bought the boat and I didn't have much expierience. So I just realized the missalignment after I pulled the drive to check the gimbal bearing and hat problems to get it in after changing the bearing.
I aligned it then, but I gues there was already damage done.
