Default coupler for Bravo 1 7.4l 330hp

Hi,

can anyone explain the difference between the coupler with short neck approximatle 200 - 300 $ and the long neck for 700+ $
For me the rubbersection looks the same. Just the long neck makes it 400$ more expensive?

Unfortunately I can not upload pictures yet.

Thanks.

IIRC, the short one has an aluminum spline section and the longer one is steel.
You'd have to post part numbers for anyone to be more accurate.

Was curious about this myself

This short neck style says it's for HP. Some Race 500 and 525 stern drives. Rated up to 600 HP in the second link.

CP Performance is selling the A9 as HP which is the aluminum hub according to this post.

part #'s I founds on them
861523 A20 long steel hub
861523 A9 says short Aluminum hub, designing 1
861523 A7 long steel hub
861523 A5 496
861523 A18 short steal hub design 3
The one for a Bravo one is called for a plug in style.
Sorry, I can't post links yet.

So I guess the "cheap ones" are according to CP performance the china ones?
Has anyone experience with the couplers around 200-300$ on a standard 330hp 7.4?

Longneck handles more HP. I've seen people use them for up to 800hp. I've found it helps while aligning drives

Well, the issue is there are many coupler numbers roaming around, so necessarily not all the short are aluminum.
I was going off the top of my head.
And when I first read this thread, I knew no way is ANY OEM coupler $200 to $300.
I have no experience with any non-OEM coupler whether Sierra, GLM, or Ebay/Amazon counterfeits.
So that'll be a gamble you'll have to take.

I remember the thread with those numbers you tried to link.
Most have been superseded.
I compiled a list and searched on BAMs site. BAM Here
If you aren't aware that's where you should search for parts via your serial number. (And Buy!)

Anyhow here is an updated list with superseded numbers via BAM and MSRP pricing:
861523A20 = 8M0098798 $923.02 (Old description says long steel, new doesn't specify/no picture) (Claims "Mercury Racing Part")
861523A7 = 8M0098796 $1,009.64 (Old description and picture say long steel, new doesn't specify/new picture shows long)
861523A9 = 8M0098795 $715.49 (Old description says aluminum hub, new doesn't specify/both pictures show short)
861523A18 = 8M0098797 $1,399.93 (Old description says steel, no length, new doesn't specify/no picture)
861523A5 = NLA

Anyhow, without knowing your serial this appears to be your number: 861523A9 = 8M0098795 $715.49
Used about everywhere except higher HP apps.

I would get an OEM Merc one for sure and not some $200 "for Mercruiser" one off Amazon or Ebay. Any Merc version should last for 20 years with your power if maintained.

An old quote from Eddie Young

The steel one with the snout will work for a plug in.

I didn't pull the engine yet, but it looks like I have the old style 18643A7 like in the picture, just with a short snout.
The diameter is much smaller, so I guess it can not handle that much torque.
It was slipping above 4000rpm.
