I just finished doing mine, since you haven't cut anything yet I would really try to bring up the 8.8's as far as possible. Just leave the existing speakers where they are down low. I installed 3 sets of 8.8's and I have more than enough bass without a sub. Good luck

I don't see that sub part number listed on their site. I have the M10IB5.

I will be really close to the recommended wattage for the speakers, right on the subs at 250 each and 25 light on the 8.8s and right on the 7.7 at 100 each.

Should I put more power than is recommended through them?

I would've done a 600/4 and 750/1 or for a little less cash an 800/8 and a 600/1, if they would make the XD1000/1 in a marine amp it would be perfect for those subs, but I wouldn't recommend them unless the boat is always in fresh water. I have run the standard XD's on numerous lake boats without issues. I actually prefer the XD amps over the HD amps on full range speakers as I can hear the amps switching through the speakers and if the ohm load gets below 1.7 or so the amps start to freak out. Since most of the boats I work on run 6 speakers, putting 4 of them on 2 channels cuts the ohm load down to 2 and it can easily dip below that depending on voltage and a number of other factors.

I like headroom in my stereos because music is not linear and tuned correctly more power is never a bad thing. Just like when buying a boat, most of us buy the boat with the biggest motor we can afford. That same theory in my mind applies to boats because I always want more out of my system and I rail on my stuff hard so that I know where the limits are for customers. Tuned correctly there is no issue with running 150-200 watts per 7.7 or 8.8 speaker. If you look closer at the JL specs is says recommended RMS amp power is up to 175 for the 7.7 and 250 for the 8.8. I don't think you'll be disappointed in your setup at all. It is all really good equipment that sounds good together.

The reason I like the XD amps is because they draw very little power and are extremely efficient, which is big if you sit at the sand bar or party cove with the stereo cranked up, and in this application the 800/8 gives double the output to the cockpit speakers and the 600/1 gives marginally more power at 300 each to the subs. You wouldn't necessarily notice the power increase to the subs, but would for the cockpit speakers. Also, the XD amps are priced extremely competitively so you could do a 800/8 and 600/1 for about the same as the 900/5.

If you wanted to save a little money you could do a 600/6 and give the 8.8's 200 each and 75 each to the cockpit speakers and still run the 600/1 for the subs and save about $150 over the 900/5 which would basically pay for your wiring kit. There are a 100 different ways to go with stereo equipment and again I think you'll be happy with the 900/5. I tried the 900/5 in my truck and wasn't happy hearing the amp switching through the front stage and switched to the XD1000/5. I switch my stereo in my truck out once a year so I can audition different products and be able to base recommendations of real experience and not just what I think the stereo will do. In the next month or so my truck will be changed from Audison Voce speakers on the 1000/5 and a 10TW3 to Focal KRX2's and a pair of 12TW3's running off a Bit10, BitPlay HD, and powered by an Audison Voce 5.1K HD so that I can finally take full advantage of my collection of 24 bit music.

I just did a very similar system. 4 8.8" and 2 10" subs. JL 8X800 FOR 8.8's and JL 2X600 for 10". Sounds incredible. If you can, I'd have a local paint shop paint the grills prior to install. Made a big difference on my setup.

Just curious, is that 4 sets of 8.8's or 4 speakers?

(4) 8.8" speakers. 6 speakers total with the (2) 10" subs.

I love the 8.8"s.
