I doubt you can make it work.

NMEA0183 is a mess.

See the thread I created about hooking up a newer Garmin GPS to Mercury Smartcraft.

Are you dealing with the Livorsi antenna that died because of the non-replaceable battery?

If so, just remove it and replace it with this:

wieland, does the back of your speedo look like this ? which white wire are you using

Yes, exactly. I had an older Garmin GPS 180 that I had prior hooked to the speedo and it worked perfectly. The new 741 XS i wired the same way, blue wire from Garmin to white wire from speedo and it doesn't work.

My old one was a 180 also, are you using the white wire in the big plug or the single small one........

ok thats the way Im connected, I did go into settings and turned on 2 other perimeters that were off

Again, the NMEA0183 standard has changed several times in the 25 years since the GPS Map 180 was introduced. Newer Garmin devices are most likely not compatible with a turn of the century GPS speedometer.

Get an NMEA2000 speedometer.
