I am thinking/planning on replacing my Raymarine chartplotter with a Garmin. The Raymarine has an external antenna. The Garmin has internal. The unit will be mounted in the dash on my Formula 330SS. that has a bimini top. Any thoughts on if I will need an external antenna?

Thanks for the offer. I currently have an external antenna hooked to my Raymarine A60. I have no idea as to the antenna compatability with the upcoming Garmin 942. Or even if I will need to use the external antenna.

You will not need the antenna unless it is mounted in a carbon fiber dash. There are exceptions but it is always trial and error. 95% chance your good

Thanks again to all. I ran across a Garmin website, where they claim that the internal antenna will "look" thru the windshield and lite canvas. With your input, and the Garmin site, I'm going to go with the internal ant. Guess I can always hook it up later. Now for 942xs or 942xs plus..........

This is my Boat. Cruisers 500 Express cruiser. I am using the internal GPS signal for all units. Its a Hard Top Boat. The hard top has Isenglass that slants and is connected to the windshield. No problems with signal.
