Default filling in exhaust holes

I want to fill in my exhaust holes completely in order to move the exhaust further up the transom .I was going to cut four 4" pieces of wood to fill the hole .What to do next I am not sure how the wood plugs are held in ,do the original holes need to be tapered out for more glass area for more glass adhesion and strength [my new k planes bolt holes will go through the pluged up exhaust hole on both sides and the middle two holes are about 4'' away from the middle stringer from the bottom of the hole .What materials would I need to do this job properly? I have worked with fiberglass before but I'am not up to date with the latest products or methods .

go to page 8 of boat painting 101. i filled some dash holes and that is similar. you will just have to stack a few layers of 3/4 inch plywood and grind back the bevel a bit farther maybe 2 or 3 inches. you will also have to glass the inside too. make sure you use West Systems or some other epoxy. you can contact me by phone if you need any further tips. 419-461-1484 good luck
