Default Help..Need to fill hole in bottom of boat

1986 22' Pachanga with a thru hull fitting as pictured. Looks like a 1.5" hole in the bottom of the boat I'd like to fill and not have pop out. There is a piece of wood installed as well that was used to tighten the nut down on. What is the best wat to make a permanent repair for this???

IMO you will want to grind on the outside and inside a taper that goes away from the hole. Then I would use epoxy or vinnylester to do the repair. It is a little stronger then polyester. The taper will make sure that you do not get a crack in the future and have the thing pop out. Then gel coat it and you are off. I have to do the same thing as the bone head that put them on my boat put them in front of the lower unit and my slip is off the charts!!!

I am going to go with a unit that TooOld sells. It has an adjustable height for the pick up so I will be able to fine tune it. I have no idea what the best height will be os I figured that this was the best alternative.....

I could not find the one on Tricks Web site but these are some others.

The one that Trick had was I thought nicer

I have not heard anybody say that you can gel directly over epoxy. I called West, and they even said don't do it....unless the moon and stars are just right

You cannot use gelcoat (polyester) over epoxy, but you can go this way: epoxycolors

From West systems site .....

Polyester gelcoat is a pigmented version of the resin used to build fiberglass boats and other products. Gelcoat is sprayed into a mold before the glass fabric and resin are applied to provide a smooth pre-finished surface when the part is removed from the mold. It is not often used as a post-production finish coating, but it can be applied over epoxy and is useful in some repair situations. Refer to 002-550 Fiberglass Boat Repair and Maintenance, published by Gougeon Brothers, for detailed information on patching gelcoat over an epoxy repair.
I am in the process of filling holes in the transom with epoxy and then redrilling for thru bolts ...its some bad ass stuff .....m

That pigment for the epoxy is neat, but it's still epoxy. Meaning it's difficult to make shiny, without clearing over it. For the exterior of the boat on a small repair job, I would seal the epoxy with Duratec or vinylester prior to top coating, if you need to use gel.
The tec at West told me I could gel over epoxy if it cured at the right temp (I forget what that was) and everything else was perfect...... then he said he just recommended not using gel directly over epoxy.
