The 182C is bigger (taller) than the lower bank on the dash panel and overlaps the horizontal lip. It just looks like it is too big when mounted in the center. The 172C is smaller and fits in this spot better. The newer Fastech models have a flat dash panel making for easier layout symmetry.
I know the waters here like the back of my hand, and will generally use GPS for nighttime and unfamiliar waters. With the money I have invested in the engines, I consider the guages more critical than the GPS in most of the boating I do locally.
The Factory layout is asymmetric due to the jog in the dashboard which is lower on the left. The "F" layout takes advantage of the larger space on the L for the 182C and also puts the guages closer together, making it easier to do a quick scan of engine vitals when running hard.
Hope I like it when it's all said and done.

You sound like a doctor or something using all these big words like asymmetric and symmetry, we are talking about dash panels not a set of bolt on boobies here.
