Question power steering

My steering went south on my last trip out last summer. I was hoping to get some opinions on the roadblock that my mechanic has recently faced when trying to order parts for my 1990 F242 LS 7.4L with a Performance Bravo 1 steering rack assembly.

The power steering pump checks out ok. My mechanic tells me that he has to purchase the entire steering 'kit', which includes the cable and rack assembly, instead of being able to acquire just the assembly. The reason being that my original cable will not fit the new steering assembly.

Even though my mechanic is experienced, my apprehension is that he doesn't have the experience of finding 'original' parts for my Formula in comparison to some of you guys who have been working on boats for years. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just spoke to my mechanic, turns out I need a actuator valve part or I broke a sheer pin. He told me that I have a hydraulic gear driven set up. So he's working on locating the parts. I didn't know that formula use a different manufactuator for the steering system I thought its all MERCRUISER.. My bad..
