The Alpha is basicaly a crash box, has an ignition interupt switch that cuts out the engine for nano-second when shifted. The water pump is a similiar impeller in a cup deal, and sits in the top of the lower unit case, spun by the vertical shaft.
My 32 Pachanga had a 454 Alpha set up, one converted to counter rotation, and it worked fine for some 550 hours over six years.

My buddy (PachangaMike) has that 32 Pac you saw in the boathouse a while back. He's considering swapping one drive over to counter rotate. Did you notice any appreciable difference or gain after you swapped over? Do you know of any counter rotating Alphas in need of a good home?
Also, all these years, I've never really know what the heck a "crash box" is. Can you expound and enlighten me?

I just thought a pump on the engine would provide more water even at idle speeds.

The Bravo style water pump does have a higher volume but the alpha pump supplys more than enough water as kong as everything else is in proper order.
I run Johnson crank mounted pumps in mine with 540s and they are considerably smaller than the Bravo pumps.

Well I was up at the boat this afternoon and a couple of other guys were up at the dock one of them was Kanookster a board member and helped me find my problem one. I changed the wrong sensor and he showed me what the problem was. I hope
