To Stroke or not to Stroke?
So I'm pulling my 350mags in a couple weeks and Ive been trying to figure out whether to stroke them to 383's. I am for sure upgrading heads, headers, cam, carbs and ignition. I cant really come up with a reason not to stroke em out. I met someone on here earlier in the year with a 272 that had done some significant upgrades including 383's... any feedback from you guys that have been down this road before would be great.... I am ultimately going for reliabilty obviously speed... if I can get in the 80's I would be happy for now.

A buddy had a 89 272 with warmed over 454 mags.......72-73 on the speedo (not GPS), that's it. Those hulls have a hook in them and you just can't get the bow up. A guy on Speedwake has a 272 with twin 540's and he just barely runs 80.......and he's making about 600hp.

I'll prob go ahead and stroke em out... I thought 80's would be pushin it.... my other thought would be to pro-charge em after all the engine work but it sounds like my 272 wont see the 80's even with stokers and pro chargers, so maybe I'll sell her when I'm done playing with it and upgrade to a faster hull..... start all over again!!! thanks for the input

I always wanted to put a 406 or a 410 small block in my 272 but went and bought my 311 instead. I would think the it would run 70-73 all day long. that would be a great little pkg

I never thought about about 406 or 410.... I'll have to look around and see what kinda deal I can get on the blocks...

Bought a 1995 271 sr1 few weeks ago, 502 mpi, does about 60, spinning a 24 B1; thinking of a Pro Charger, bring power to around 650hp, what speeds will I be looking at? Not trying to rob thread, just chiming in.

What speed are you looking for , Might want to look into a 26p lab or check your X dem and put a 2" shorty on much cheaper, and you should be in the upper 60s for sure !

I blame the X dimension more than the hook. The hook is only from the strake out to the chine. As you can see here it's barely in the water at speed. Slow down to 60 or 65 and its fully in the water.
