fastech 271
what can I expect out of one of these?
its a 1999
has a mpi 502 in it
bravo performance drive?
what speeds are we talkin here?
any other input would be great as well...
how does this boat compare to a velocity with a 502 in it?

beerock,
I have a '99 271 with a HP500EFI in it. Great boat, I have run as fast as 72 on GPS, generally around 70. From what I have gathered from OSO comments is that most with 502 run in the mid 60's.
The 271 does struggle a bit getting on plane, 502 or HP500 but runs solid once there.
I have not compared it to the velocity, but from what I have read I would expect the velocity to be a bit faster in chop and the 271 to be about the same (within 1 or 2 MPH) in smooth water. You will also find that the 271 will be heavier and more luxurious than the velocity, but that is a matter of preference.
One of the reasons I went with the Formula, besides the reputation, ride and handling, was that it had one of the largest and most comfrontable cockpits of the 27 footers I looked at.

ya im really impressed with the boats interior, its almost as if don aronow is still building them
that ultra leather made me go nutz, it is so damn soft!
how is the strength of it though, have any of you ripped that ultraleather?
have any of you broken the bolsters? the bvoat im looking at seems to have a crooked bolster on the driver side.
one other thing is the fact that it has a bravo drive on it.
heck id rather have a old vovlo 250 with no trim then a brand spanking new bravo....well, maybe id take the bravo cuz I like trim.
has anyone ever heard of a 271 fastech with a asd6 on the back???
I really like this boat but the speeds arent impressing me.
and coming from a donzi with a 351w that would easily beat this boat if I had trim doesnt make me want to jump at the chance to buy one and end up guzzling gas..
by the way how is the fuel economy on the 271?

Beerock,
Just got out of a 93 271 SR1 to a new 292 with the scorpion package. The 271 was a great boat, heavy, great in the rough water, but the speed is just not there. Granted, the new fast-tech is a bit faster, but don't buy the boat for speed, you won't last long in it. Buy it for its quality, great looks, and roomy cockpit and cabin for a 27' and you will be happy. I had a weld break on my 27 bolster, but that was a relatively easy fix.
