Perfectmix - We are running 1:1 gears with the standard Twin Disc Trans and 1:54:1. Had them checked out /gone through and no problems. Toughest part was the 1000rpm shift limit. Rebuilt the carbs and that helped (1050 dominator's) I installed temp gauges on the trans also to keep an eye on things & change the oil every month or so along with the motors for precaution. We are in the low 50's @ 3800 rpm. By the way i screwed up - the color is torch red not fire red on the drives. Below was fairly easy and not that expensive to update just a lot of time as usual. Also added some gauges and new shift/throttle controls.

Alj- this was from Canada....worked on it for a while. Some stuff was good and some bad! Many is the time i would like to have the extra 5 feet you have in the rough stuff. We actually wanted a 40 but timing was not right i guess. Thanks much for the strainer info. Here is a pic with what we have.... and thanks again for the info.

That sea strainer looks like the GIL marine unit but without the barrel clamp outer ring assembly. Definately not the Perko unit like mine. Yours uses a plexiglas cover and the cover bolts down. Check with Teague Custom Marine in Valencia Cal. They have one that looks similar. GIL marine lists a wing nut style plexiglas lid as part #0913270. Not sure if GIL is still around but their phone used to be 216-354-6800 or 800-624-9805.
But Dave....don't worry about it. I'll take care of it after you drop it off at my house

Alj. We too have a tough time shifting at 1000. I adjusted the throttles to allow the engine to idle there and bump them up once they engage to keep from stalling & be nice to the trans. We also turn inboard. Just have to increase the RPM's to 3000 and it climbs up pretty quick. These do sit low in the stern. Maybe the holidays will bring you a nice set of the Arneson rocker plates to help???$$$
Our strainers were old Gil's...unfortunately they don't make these lids anymore so i will have to get them remanufactured here locally or buy new units. Bit by bit the whole boat ends up being replaced it seems.
With your rig i would think the larger diameter along with some good torque theoretically should produce a good hole shot and top end will not be affected much. Higher pitch may take a while for the props to hook up & stall your hole shot but increase top end but its a good experiment to try.......... just don't overload the engines with a lot of pitch. Extreme cases end up in oil dilution from too much fuel delivery and bad things happen after that.

I had the same 1000 RPM shift problem with my 302.
I work for Cummins and we are a Twin Disc dist. I talked to Twin Disc at length on this topic.
After long discussions, I was told that a 1200 RPM shift would not hurt the tranny. I then drilled 1/16th holes in the primary throttle blades and set the idle to 1150, and as Cuda can tell the engine does not even think of stalling nor has it caused any damage.
On a side note,
The Twin Disc 502 is not rated for any more than 386Hp nor is it rated over 4200 RPM (We all violate that) That is why they sling a little oil out the over flow at high RPM.
And after talking to Twin Disc, I found that Betty Cook never got written approval from Twin Disc to use them in this application, but she bought and used them any how assuming all liability.
