Background on a 1992 271 SR1
Alright all you birdbrains, I need a little history lesson. Found a 1992 Formula 271 for sale by me, at a pretty good price. From what I can see, this boat looks an awful lot like a Fastech 271, but without the step. The hull is for sure a straight V, no step.
I'm guessing this was a "fill-in" model between the twin engine 272 and the stepped 271? Any idea if this hull is the same as the 271, just without the step, or is it something different?
Also, any thoughts as to performance? Boat has a 454/365 hp, I'm guessing 55-60 mph in the right conditions. But... I believe the 365 hp has the good forged internals, just waiting for a rebuild and perhaps a small blower....
BTW, asking price is mid-20's on a trailer.

Price seems good, get a survey.
Does it have (I'm sure it does) the "glassed in" platform. If so, your looking at an upgraded 242 with a platform. Speed wise I think your in the ballpark.
The 271 featured the newer styling more than anything over the older 272 model. Curved windshield, newer style cockpit, etc.
Hull wise I think your close. I believe is is different than the 272, but not the exact same as a FasTech model, and not just the steps. I'm not 100% sure on this. Others on this Forum I'm sure can answer this. "Mopower" might have that info.
Good luck.

OK, 272 qnd 271 are totally different . 272 was 27'2" bow to stern PLUS the swim platform. 271 is 27'1" INCLUDING the molded in platform. 1991 was the last year for the 272. 1992 brought the 271(and others with the molded platform). Now you get a 2' smaller boat like everyone else(with numbers that sound almost the same) . I suppose the steps just weren't ready for the 1992 model year. Or they saved them for the next year. The comparable 272 today is a 292 when you get out the tape measure. As a matter of fact , some dealers I know will advertise a 272 as "29" feet
The 271 is actually a little bigger than the old 242 , (given the fact that the swim platforms are about 2') the 242 works out to 26' and a couple of inches.
Dockrocker , 1992 was a big change for Formulas design , since they changed to the molded platforms and started including them in the boats advertized size. My guess is , they saved the steps for another year as another improvement hoping to sell more(just like auto mfgs do)

Re: Background on a 1992 271 SR1
The 271 without a step was built from 92 thru 96. In 97 Formula added a single step to the hull. Rest of the boat stayed basically the same. Today's new 271 is virtually identical to the 271 SR-1 introduced as` a 1992 model, except for the single step in the hull. IMHO the step was added partly for marketing, partly for a slight performance increase. Today's 271 is a great single engine boat,as was it's 92 version.Maybe a little pricey, maybe a little heavy, maybe a little slower than some like(mid to hi 60's generally) but still a great single engine boat. We just received a new 2005 model, and except for the step and some upgrades on the amenities, basically the same as the 92.
