CHIME CHIME.....

OK hear is the deal. First of all if you do not put waxing agent into the gel coat it will never cure. There are other things you can add like Durratech but for small repairs waxing agent is fine. West Marine sells Gell with and without waxing agent already in it if you are worried about the correct mix. The complaint with gel coat is that it sprays out with a heavy orange peal look to it and you have to wet sand it and buff it to get it to look good. What some people say you can do is to take wax paper and after you fill the repair you can put waz paper over it and then use a roller to smooth it out. The wax paper kind of acts like the mold that the boat was made in and then you can pull it off after a full cure and it will be all shiny. I have never tried this as to just wet sand a small area is such a easy thing to do.

Thanks Jon. The areas I have to do are your basic small areas, chips, etc., so I think I'll just smear it on and wet sand it down.

I was under the assumption that you cover a gelcoat repair with cellophane (or wax paper?) because it won't fully cure if exposed to air, and can stay tacky. I have heard of a spray you can use as an alternative over gel to block the air so it can harden fully.
