Been a long time, but I think the hull side where I installed mine was about 1/2". After I drilled the hole, I used a t-slot cutter and removed the coring around the hole, then mixed up some thickened epoxy to fill that void. Makes it both water sealed and solid when installing the thru hull. I made my thru hull because I wanted to run my AC while on the lift, so I made it with as thick as wall possible to thread the inside as well, and to accomodate the ball valve.
They make thru hulls that are longer than normal for those occasions

You want me to come down and drill the hole? I'll do it with no hesitation. 
I noticed your power panel is just like mine was, a little long for the area. Took mine to work and milled a little off the top and bottom to make it fit.

Square to the hull of where it will be located. You want the head of the thru hull flat to the hull side and nut flat to the inside surface when installed. Put sealer under the head and on the threads under the head that will fill the hole with sealant and push it in and hold it still, while someone tightens the nut from the inside, drawing the thru hull snug to the hull. Don't turn the thru hull, that'll wipe off the sealer.

Wanted to follow up with my AC install. Used it a whole 2 times this summer. First time it frosted over and I modified the the inlet. Second time worked great. Lot of time is this little project. If anyone plans to add one, I would be glade to give advice. I followed US1’s installation. Thanks US1!
