My 2002 496 HO has an inline fuel filter (just changed it last week). The Mercury part# is 864572T. If you can't get a Mercury one you should be able to cross-reference it to other makes. I talked to three Mercury dealers before I found one that even knew there were inline filters on some 496's - I guess it's pretty rare. I don't know how yours is plumbed, but on my Baja they used two 3/8" 90 degree fittings on it - seems pretty restrictive (will be changing that!).
I live in Canada but I would assume the part number would be the same in the U.S.

Any NAPA dealer should be able to come up with the part. I believe they all have access to the Sierra marine stuff. My brother-in-law has a NAPA store and is able to get me marine parts. Take raeburns part number and see if they can cross refference it for you, US and Canada would likely be same part number from Merc.

Turns out there are no exact aftermarket filters available.
I finnaly found some Merc one on Thurs. 50 bucks a
piece!!! Turns out my booster pump micro screen was
plugged solid as well. Only on starboard engine.
